Welcoming Walkout

August 2015

The before and after visuals of this project are stunning! In a nutshell we tore out an old, broken down retaining wall that was falling apart. In place we designed and built a new, beautiful, rock-solid wall that created important space. We used new plants and shrubs to soften up the landscape after installing this imposing hardscape structure and utilized a specialty arborist to cut down and remove a giant locust tree that was within our work area and very near the home.

To put it simply, Element Landscaping was awesome. They communicated with us every step of the way on our project, which was a large one. They were reasonably priced and honest. We felt comfortable having them do the work we needed, were very knowledgeable, and completed the work in a timely manner even with some unexpected set backs that were unforeseen. I would recommend Element to anyone looking for landscaping/hardscape work! I will definitely use them for future yard projects.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Our customers had a cramped area out of the front of their home where a basement walkout was located and surrounded by the old failing timber retaining wall. After removing the old wall we cut out the hill and built one tall segmental retaining wall instead of two tiers like before that took up precious space. This opened up the area in front of the walkout which is now used for grilling, outdoor entertaining, and welcoming guests to the home.

For this SRW or segmental retaining wall we used a straight face block in a blended color that went nicely with the home and added cut-to-fit caps for a finished look. In addition to the SRW, our project included perennials and shrubs, edging, decorative rock, a set of steps through the middle of the wall, and some work strengthening a rock pathway and steps around the home. We finished off the project by adding black dirt over the yard portion of our work area and seeding the dense shade area.
